‘One surgeon, one anaesthesiologist a must during surgery’

There is no alternative to anaesthesia for critically ill patients on life support, and anaesthesia is the backbone of modern medicine, said medical experts at a seminar marking the 179th World Anaesthesia Day 2025 in Mymensingh.

Held on Thursday at the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) auditorium, the seminar highlighted the urgent need for systemic improvements in the anaesthesia department across the country.

Key recommendations included ensuring a "One Surgeon, One Anaesthesiologist" policy, as the current number of anaesthesiologists is much lower than surgeons. Experts also stressed the need to introduce AI-powered robotic systems, mandatory pre-anaesthetic check-ups, and guaranteed presence of anaesthesiologists during disasters and emergencies.

Speakers noted that the quality of anaesthesia directly impacts patient outcomes. "Good anaesthesia means better results for the patient; poor anaesthesia means higher risk," they said. Without anaesthesia, surgeons cannot proceed safely with operations.

They also called for the presence of anaesthesiologists in paediatric surgeries, gynaecological procedures, and ICU care, along with ensuring proper rest for professionals—at least eight hours of break—to maintain patient safety and care quality.

The event was organised by the Bangladesh Society of Anaesthesiologists, Mymensingh District Branch, and chaired by the organisation’s convener, Dr Md Ali Siddique.

MMCH Director General Md Golam Ferdous attended as chief guest, while special guests included Professor Dr Mahfuzur Rahman Khan Chowdhury (Principal, CBMCB), Professor Dr Md Harun-or-Rashid (Head of Anaesthesia, MMCH), Professor Dr M Karim Khan (Director, CBMCB), and Professor Dr Md Matiur Rahman (Vice Principal, MMC).

Dr Ismail Hossain moderated the seminar, and a presentation on the day’s theme was given by Dr Harun-or-Rashid, ICU Chief at MMCH.
Dr Abdullah Arman offered thanks on behalf of Beximco representative Ataul Karim.

The event also featured a rally and public awareness activities.
