One killed in road crash in Satkhira

A person was killed, and seven more were injured, in a road accident on Satkhira-Khulna highway at Binerpota area of Satkhira on Wednesday. He was crushed under the wheels of a vehicle.

The deceased was identified as Sunil Kumar Mondol, 45, son of late Upendranath Mondol, resident of Binerpota Dakkhinpara village under Satkhira Sadar Upazila.

The accident occurred in front of the Power Grid Sub-station in the Upazila at around 5:30am on Wednesday.

The injured were Monohar Mondal, Uttam Kumar Shil, Babu Debnath, Suranjan Bishwas, Prohollad Mollik, Birinchi Mondol and Tariqul Islam.

Witness local Union Parishad (UP) Member Bishwanath said eight people, including Sunil Mondol, were going towards Satkhira in an engine-run van to catch fish from an enclosure. When they reached in front of the Power Grid Sub-station at Binerpota area on Satkhira-Dhaka highway, a vehicle rammed into the engine-run van carrying them from behind. Sunil Kumar Mondol fell on the road and was crush under the wheels of the vehicle. The other seven were injured at that time.

The locals rescued the injured and admitted them to Satkhira Sadar Hospital. Among them, Uttam Shil and Suranjan Bishwas are in critical condition. Local resident Dipankar Kumar said sand for filling work at Palli Bidyut Power Grid Sub-station was kept piled up on the road. The road became narrow as a result the accident occurred.

Officer-in-Charge of Satkhira police station Mohammad Rafiqul Islam confirmed the matter.
