One killed in jewellery shop robbery

A pedestrian was killed and two others were injured when a pickup van used by robbers ran over them while fleeing after looting a jewellery shop in Lakshmipur on Wednesday.

The incident happened around 8:15pm in front of Chowdhury Super Market in the College Road area.

The deceased was Safiullah, 70, a resident of the Iterpool area of Lakshmipur municipality.

Gold trader Apu Karmakar sustained serious injuries after being stabbed by robbers during the robbery at his shop named RK Shilpalaya.

He was sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for better treatment. Apu's son Ami Karmakar was also beaten up during the incident.

Ismail Hossain, who was injured after being run over by the pickup van, is being treated at Sadar hospital.  Identity of the other injured was not known.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar circle) Sohel Rana said two people have been arrested in connection with the incident. 

“An investigation is underway. More details will be released at the end of the investigation.”

The police recovered around 20 intact crude bombs from the spot.

According to the police and witnesses, the robbers blasted several crude bombs before and after the robbery to create panic among the people in the area.
