One killed as bus ploughs into spectators at football match in Cumilla

A passenger bus lost control and crashed into a crowd of spectators during a football match in Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla on Saturday afternoon, killing one person and injuring five others.

The incident took place at DR Government High School grounds in Sadar area during the final of an anti-drug football tournament, according to Muradnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zahidur Rahman.

The dead was identified as Gias Uddin, 43, an auto-rickshaw driver from Dularampur village. He died on the spot after being struck by the bus, which belonged to the Elliotganj Express line.

The injured were named as Golam Rabbani, 18, Shah Jalal, 45, Saidul Islam, 30, Hrithik Chandra Barman, 20, and Dudh Miah, 56, all from nearby villages. 

They were immediately taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Witnesses said the bus veered off the road and crashed into the spectators gathered around the field. Following the incident, angry locals vandalised the bus in protest.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
