The Detective Branch (DB) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP) arrested a man and seized 89,800 packets of Bidi with fake band-rolls packed in 83 cartoons from Shalbon Indrar Mour in Rangpur city on Thursday.
"A special operational team of DB police led by Inspector Md. Mozammel Haque arrested the man with a huge quantity of Bidi worth Taka 8.96-lakh and a covered van worth Taka 15-lakh from the spot," said a press release on Fridayevening.
The arrested person was identified as the driver of the seized Bidi-carrying covered van Md. Ekramul Hossain, 35, son of Afsar Ali of village Paschim Mohipur in Gangachara upazila of Rangpur.
The detainee informed police that Md. Morshedul Islam, 40, son of Md. Mokarram of village Dakshin Kartik under Haragachh police station in Rangpur metropolis is the owner of the seized Bidi with fake band rolls.
Morshedul Islam had been marketing Bidi with fake band rolls in connivance with his other cohorts for the last few years evading huge government revenue and eyes of the law enforcement agencies.
"The arrested man was handed over to Kotwali police station of RpMP after filing a case in this connection under the Special Power Act of 1974 against him and other absconding accused today," the release said.
