Detectives arrested a man on Friday night allegedly for threatening a councillor candidate in the Rajshahi City Corporation polls, slated for June 21, to change the election results.
The arrestee is Md Gias Uddin, son of Kabir Ahammad of Putibila village under Maheskhali upazila in Cox’s Bazar district.
At a press conference on Saturday noon, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police commissioner Md Anisur Rahman said that impersonating election commissioner Brigadier General (retd) Ahsan Habib Khan, Gias Uddin contacted councillor candidate Arman Ali over the phone on June 8 and talked about the election activities.
After a while, Gias again contacted the candidate over the phone and asked him to contact chief election commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal using the phone number he shared with him earlier, he said.
The police commissioner said that the arrestee again contacted the councillor candidate and at one stage asked for money, threatening that they would change the election results if the candidate did not contact them.
