One crore new employment targeted

A scheme to provide employment to one crore people has been adopted in the budget for fiscal year 2020-2021 to eradicate unemployment problem and to keep the economy running sustainably due to corona pandemic.

In this regard, about 100 economic zones will be set up across the country to create more employment through increased investment.

So far, approvals have been given to set up some 93 economic zones. Besides, another 11 lakh 5 thousand people are being brought under the social safety net.

This information was given by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in his budget proposal speech for the fiscal year 2020-21 in the Parliament on Thursday.

The size of the proposed national budget for development and non-development work in the next fiscal year is 5 lakh 68 thousand crore.

Out of the 100 economic zones, 11 have been approved to be set up in the private sector, of which 8 have already been launched. Development activities worth about Tk 1,700 crore are underway in the government economic zones. 

One of the government economic zones is 'Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial City', which is being developed as the largest planned and modern industrial zone in the country. 

So far, proposals of 20.25 billion US dollars have already been received for investment in the economic zones. There are currently 6 ongoing projects under Public-Private Partnership (PPP).
