A senior army warrant officer was killed and a soldier was injured when armed terrorists of the JSS main group opened fire on a patrol team at Ruma Upazila in Bandarban district on Wednesday night.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the deceased was identified as Patrol Commander Senior Warrant Officer Habibur Rahman. The injured soldier was identified as Firoz.
A security patrol team led by Senior Warrant Officer Habibur Rahman from Raing Khiyang Lake Army Camp went to Bathipara area of Ruma Upazila on a tip-off that a group of JSS terrorists was going there for extortion. When the patrol team reached Bathipara area at around 10:30pm on Wednesday, the terrorists opened fire on the patrol team from a nearby ‘Jhum’ house triggering a gun battle, in which there was a sign that three armed terrorists of the JSS main group were shot. Patrol Commander Senior Warrant Officer Habibur Rahman fell down after receiving bullet shot in the head by the indiscriminate firing of the fleeing terrorists. Moreover, a soldier named Firoz was shot in the right leg, ISPR added.
The body of the army warrant officer and the injured soldier were taken to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Chottogram by a helicopter on Thursday morning.
During the operation, the army patrol team seized 1 SMG, 275 rounds of fresh ammunition, 3 ammunition magazines, 3 guns, 5 rounds of ammunition, 4 pairs of uniform and Taka 52,900 in cash extorted by the terrorists.
