Acting Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Abdus Sabur Liton has warned that no matter how powerful the illegal occupants are, they will not be released under any circumstances.  The city dwellers have to speak out against occupiers of canals, ditches and sidewalks.

He said this while inspecting the eviction of illegal structures from the banks of Baroipara Birjakhal in a mobile court led by Acting Mayor Chittagong City Corporation and Executive Magistrate Marufa Begum Nelly on Thursday morning.

He said the main problem of the city is waterlogging.  In order to get rid of this waterlogging completely, 21 more canals need to be dug and cleaned outside the mega project. CCC Mayor Md. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury is keeping in touch with the ministry on this issue.  During this dry season, the work of removing the accumulated soil from small and big drains of the city is going on, he instructed the concerned people to complete this work before the onset of monsoon season.

He warned that illegal occupiers, no matter how powerful, would be released under any circumstances.  He called on the acting mayor to speak out against the occupants of canals, ditches and sidewalks.  Mosquito eradication work is also being carried out in the city divided into six zones.

He directed the officers of the concerned department to make this activity more dynamic and sought the cooperation of the people of the city in this endeavor.

Abdus Sabur Liton said, today's Bangladesh is a wonder of the world.  Bangladesh is being called the role model of development.  All this has been possible due to our concerted efforts and the visionary state policy formulation and patronage of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

CCC Acting Mayor said the Prime Minister has given priority to the development of Chittagong, emphasizing the intention to take Bangladesh to the forefront of development.  Construction of tunnels at the bottom of Karnafhuli, construction of bay terminal, construction of deep sea port, establishment of special economic zone at Mirsarai and other major improvements in rail and road communication.  Besides, the implementation of the mega project at a cost of around Tk 6,000 crore is nearing completion.

He said excavation work of Baroipara canal has also started.  But sadly, in order to hinder this development work, some selfish people are occupying canals and drains and constructing illegal structures which is not acceptable in any way.

CCC Supervising Engineer Sudip Basak and Deputy Chief Cleaning Officer Morshedul Alam Chowdhury were also present.  Officers, employees of the concerned department and Chittagong Metropolitan Police assisted in the eviction of illegal establishments.
