Occupational hazards of traditional goldsmiths

They must undergo regular health check-ups

It is shocking to learn that the average lifespan of goldsmiths in Bangladesh is 59 years only, compare to the national average of 73 years. A research report unveiled by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) says that country’s goldsmiths have long been under serious threat of premature death mostly due to cardiovascular diseases. 

The goldsmith workers are affected by various restrictive and obstructive lung diseases due to their occupation and smoking.  Goldsmiths are commonly renowned for possessing the integrate art, skill and capability to mould the precious metal into an aesthetic masterpiece.  


It is imperative to know the reason behind 

the death of the goldsmiths as they are exposed 

to various types of occupational hazards.


However, these traditional goldsmiths are exposed to various occupational health hazards ranging from musculoskeletal to respiratory to ocular and skin problems. Additionally very less is known & done about these issues. It has also been seen that these goldsmiths are not adequately aware of the safety measures which could be undertaken to prevent these adverse occurrences. Considering their hazardous occupation goldsmith needs to stop smoking, alcohol and to take preventive measures during work and should take regular health examinations. They must take precautions during work and undergo regular health check-ups.

According to the findings of the researchers, the rate of premature death among the goldsmiths is the highest.  Reportedly, major cause of death of 55 per cent goldsmith workers is cardiovascular diseases including ischemic heart disease and stroke.  However, the lifestyle of the goldsmiths provides some kind of indication about their causes of death. Around 70 per cent had the habit of regular smoking while 20 per cent used to consume smokeless tobacco. Even 50 per cent of them had the habit of imbibing alcohol. It is imperative to know the reason behind the death of the goldsmiths as they are exposed to various types of occupational hazards. Hence, authorities concerned should endeavor to conduct further research to find out the real causes of the premature deaths of the goldsmiths considering their lifestyle, food habit and work environment.
