New Cricket Board has announced that they have retired the jersey of one of their greatest players and former captain Daniel Vettori. Vettori, who has a brilliant career for the Black Caps retired in 2015, after their loss to Australia in the ICC World Cup final that year, which was played down under. The announcement was made during the revealing of jersey numbers for the Kiwi Test team for their upcoming Sri Lanka series, report agencies.
Daniel Vettori also captained the team from 2007-2011 and was one of the youngest players to make his Test debut for Kiwis at the age of 18 and is the most capped New Zealand player with 112 Tests to his name. The left-arm spinner has been one of the most prolific wicket-takers and even scored some good amount of runs in all the three formats. He picked his 100th Test wicket at the age of 21 making him one of the youngest to do so.
The cricket board announced that all the New Zealand players who have played 200 ODIs, had their shirt numbers retired. Vettori, with 291 ODIs to his name, 284 of which coming for New Zealand, is at the peak of that list and his number 11 jersey was in the list. “Players that represent New Zealand in 200 ODIs have their shirt number retired. Daniel Vettori who wore number 11 has played the most ODIs for the BLACKCAPS with 291,” BlackCaps tweeted.
