Nor’wester wreaks havoc in Meherpur

A nor'wester accompanied by strong winds swept several areas of Meherpur on Sunday.

The storm, accompanied by rain, uprooted trees, flattened banana and paddy fields, and led to widespread power outages across the district since night. Mangoes, litchis, and jackfruits have fallen prematurely, causing significant losses to local farmers.

In Chandbil village, a two-bigha banana field was completely destroyed. The farmer had invested around Tk 150,000 and was expecting to harvest within a few days. Now, the entire field lies flattened, and the farmer fears he won’t recover a single penny.

The storm struck on Saturday evening, damaging banana, paddy, and papaya fields across the region. Mango and litchi growers had just begun harvesting on May 15, but they claim 40–50% of the fruits have fallen due to the storm, leading to potential major financial losses.

Additionally, power supply to Meherpur town, Sadar, and Mujibnagar upazilas was cut off from the evening onward. Fallen trees have blocked roads, disrupting transportation.

The Department of Agricultural Extension said they are assessing the damage in the fields and expect to have an estimate of the losses by tomorrow.
