State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid sees an uninterrupted power supply with affordable prices to all consumers of the country as a big challenge after 100 percent electricity coverage.
He was speaking at a press conference at the Secretariat on Thursday afternoon after receiving the ‘Swadhinata Padak’ on behalf of the Power Division.
Nasrul Hamid said that ‘the energy price is rising around the world, which is a matter of concern. However, we have everything in mind, hopefully, we can handle it.’
"We have not made any major decision yet. I think the projects including Payra 1320MW Power Plant, Rampal, Matababari and some other mega power projects will help to supply uninterrupted electricity in the country,” he added.
He hoped that Bangladesh would be in a better position by next year to ensure an uninterrupted power supply. "We are trying to do it as soon as possible. However, it took about 20 to 30 years in South Korea to achieve what we have achieved today. We may not have that much time. Hopefully, by 2024 we can attain a better position,” Nasrul also added.
Asked whether the price of electricity would go up, the state minister responded, “It depends on subsidies. We have proposed the necessary subsidies. Now the government is considering how much to invest in this sector. However, we want to keep it stable.”
“On the other hand, BERC knows whether the price of gas will go up. They have arranged a public hearing, which is going on. But we want to keep it at a tolerable level. It will depend on BERC,” Nasrul continued.
He said the government has given ‘Swadhinata Padak’ to the power division for its contribution to the socio-economic development of the
country through 100 percent electricity coverage and successful completion of 100 percent electrification in the ‘Mujib Barsho’.
“An additional 1500 MW of electricity will be required this summer and in the coming Ramadan. If we can have energy savings then the demand will be reduced. I expect the consumers will be aware of the issue during the volatile energy situation of the world.
Among others, Power Division Secretary Md. Habibur Rahman, PDB Chairman Engineer Engineer Md Mahbubur Rahman and Power Cell DG Mohammad Hossain were also present at the event.
In addition, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina handed over the '‘Swadhinata Padak-2022' to Nasrul Hamid at the Prime Minister's Office on Thursday.
