Nomination papers of three out of five mayoral candidates in Singair municipality elections were canceled after scrutinizing their documents on Thursday.
District Election officer and Returning Officer of the election, Sheikh Muhammad Habibur Rahman confirmed the information.
The cancelled candidates can appeal against their cancellation within three days, said the Returning Officer.
The Returning Officer said Awami League nominated Abu Naeem Md Bashar, BNP-backed incumbent mayoral advocate Md Khorshed Alam Bhuiyan Joy, Jatiya Party's Abu Bakar Siddique, Md Abbas Ali (independent) and Md Jahabul Hossain (independent) had filed nomination papers as mayoral candidates. Of them, the nomination papers of Awami League and BNP-backed candidates have been validated.
The nomination paper of Jatiya Party's Abu Bakar Siddique has been canceled due to lack of party supporting papers. On the other hand, the nomination papers of independent candidate Md. Jahabul Hossain were canceled due to discrepancies in the list of 100 candidates and the nomination papers of another independent candidate Md. Abbas Ali were canceled.
The election commissioner has fixed up date February 11 for withdraw of candidature, Symbol allocation on February 12 and the election will be held on February 28, the election office source added.
The total number of voters is 22,065 in 9 wards of Singair Municipal. Of these, 11,565 are female voters and 11,120 are male voters.
