There is no way without ensuring environment- friendly development globally to keep the earth habitable amid continuous degradation of environment, ecology and biodiversity due to climate change. Chief Executive of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers' Association (BELA) and Supreme Court Lawyer Syeda Rizwana Hasan made the observation at a seminar held at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) on Sunday.
The Department of Bengali of BRUR organised the seminar titled "Civic Responsibilities in Environmental Protection" at Academic Building No-2 of the university on the campus.
Director of Riverine People, Dean of the Faculty of Arts of BRUR and environmentalist Professor Dr Abu Saleh Mohammad Wadudur Rahman (Tuhin Wadud) presided over the event. Teachers and students of the university, Riverine People activists, environmentalists, development workers and NGO executives participated in the seminar. Professor of the Department of Bengali Dr Nittya Ghosh delivered a welcome speech while Director of Green Eco Sanjoy Chowdhury delivered inaugural speech in the event moderated by teacher of the Department of Bengali of BRUR Khairul Islam.
BELA Rajshahi Coordinator Tanmoy Sanyal and its Research Officer Raisul Hasan, spoke, among others. Syeda Rizwana Hasan said Bangladesh is the eighth most densely populated country in the world. "Our coastal districts might be submerged if the sea level rises by one meter.
We do not know where people of that vast coastal area district will go as climate change migrants under such situations?" she asked.
She said there is no way for survival without environment-friendly development around the world to maintain and improve the environment, ecology and biodiversity and keep the planet habitable. "No environmentally destructive project should be undertaken anywhere in the globe. Any development that poisons water, air and soil cannot be called development," she said, putting stress on massive tree plantations for a green nature across the globe.
