Atiqul Islam, mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation, said that trade licenses would not be issued in any building that does is not abiding by the building code.
He made these comments while talking to the reporters while inspecting the fire-damaged building at in the capital's Banani Chairman Bari area after the fire was brought under control at around 1pm on Saturday.
The DNCC mayor said, "I have instructed the regional executive officer here to go to these buildings to check the license. Trade licenses will not be issued in any building that does not comply with the Bangladesh National Building Code.” He said that the trade license will only be obtained if the building code is complied with after seeing all the arrangements in the space between the installments of two buildings and how wide the alternative stairs need to be. Otherwise the license will not be issued. All trade licenses in the Chairman Bari area will not be renewed for the time being.
The mayor further said that the building in Banani that caught fire is very old. The fire services have worked well and with the help of the fire control force sent by the air force, the fire was brought under control.
The mayor further said that it is still unknown why the fire started. There were many garments here before but 5hey have moved away from here. There has not been any news of anyone being stuck in there.
3 teams including the City Corporation worked in and out for rescue and containment of the fire. The back of the building holds an emergency exit metal staircase.
The fire broke out around 9 am on Saturday. Fifteen units of the fire service and members of the air force brought the fire under control after three and a half hours.
