The people in Jhenidah have witnessed a different look at the market of sacrificed animals’ hides this Eid Ul Azha. There was actually no buyer for the hides during the Korbani hours started on Saturday morning.
Further, the local mosques, madrashah and other religious organizations were not showing much more eagerness to collect the hides like past years.
When this correspondent visited some areas in Jhenidah Sadar and Shailkupa upazila witnessed that each piece of hides of male goats was selling at Taka 35 to 45, while no demand for the female species hides.
Each piece of cow hide was selling at taka 350 to 400. The same was selling for three times more than the past year.
Abdul Malek, a man belongs to Kalicharanpur village in Jhenidah Sadar upazila said he had given a piece of hide of a goat to a local boy free of cost when the buyers offer him Taka 35 for the same.
Some Sohrab Hossain of Bogura village in Shailkupa upazila said he had thrown the hide in to a ditch that might be consumed by dog or other beasts as it could not cover even the slaughtering cost.
He said the representatives of mosque, madrashah and similar religious and social organizations were sending their men to collect the hides of sacrificed animals to villages. But no such man was available to collect the same when the prices could not cover the daily labour charge for procuring the hides this season, Sohrab Hossain said.
Raw hide buyer Shyamal Kumar Das of Bisnudia village in Jhenidah said the wholesale buyers had advised them not to purchase the hides as there were no major demands for the same in the season.
