Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader Friday said there is no scope to change the government without holding elections.

"If you want to change the government, another election will have to be held. There is scope to change the government without polls," he told a press conference at the AL's Bangabandhu Avenue central office here.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said BNP leaders are spending their time in relax, while the party workers who were brought to the field with hope are disappointed now.

"There is no such situation in the country that BNP workers will join its movement responding to the call of BNP leaders. In fact, BNP has now lost its ability to wage a movement," he added.

The AL general secretary said the country's people have no involvement with BNP and its movement, while they have trust in the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

"People of this country have accepted her (Sheikh Hasina) honesty and leadership. After 1975, no honest, hardworking and efficient leader was born in the country like her. So, the people of Bangladesh are with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina," he said.

Quader said responsible people should not make any embarrassing statements. "All of us responsible should refrain from making statements that are embarrassing for the government," he added.

UNB adds: Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said that extortion in transport has been going on for a long time.

"And efforts are underway to bring it under control," he was speaking in a press conference at Awami League's central office at Bangabandhu Avenue Friday morning.

Regarding the prices of essentials, Quader said the government is working sincerely to control the price of goods in the market. "We are working and the result will come one day." About BNP, he said that BNP is daydreaming the change of government in a short time.

Quader said BNP has become isolated. People have no interest in the BNP's movement. People are happy with Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina's leadership is trusted and the people of this country have accepted her honesty, diligence and leadership, he added.

"There is no alternative to Sheikh Hasina as the leader of Bangladesh."

Whether Dr Muhammad Yunus' sentence will affect the relationship between Bangladesh and the United States, Quader said I don't think it will affect the relations between the two countries.

Among others, Awami League Organizing Secretary BM Mozammel Haque, Afzal Hossain, Publicity and Publication Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua, Deputy Office Secretary Sayem Khan and other central Awami League leaders were present.
