West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said her government will not allow implementation of the National Register of Citizens in the state. “The implementation of the NRC as nothing but a political vendetta of the BJP-led central government,” she told the West Bengal Assembly.

Mamata said “we will never let BJP implement the National Register of Citizens in West Bengal. She was speaking during a discussion on the motion on NRC. “This (NRC implementation) is nothing but an attempt to divert the attention of the people from the ongoing economic crisis in the country,” she said.

Assam is the only state in India where the NRC has been implemented. The final list was published on August 31 which excluded 19.6 lakh people. During the campaign for parliamentary elections earlier this year, the BJP had aggressively called for introducing NRC in West Bengal to drive out “illegal immigrants.”

The BJP’s high pitch campaign on NRC helped the party make substantial gains in the elections winning 18 seats while the Trinamool Congress suffered reverses managing just four more than the saffron party.
