No official notice will be issued in the name of illegal occupants and they will be evicted immediately.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam made the comment while talking to reporters after a drive to evict illegal structures of Lautla canal at Mohammadpur Basila in the capital on Sunday morning.

He said that the length and width of the canal were not what it were supposed to be.

The objective of the canal has been hampered by illegal occupation and construction. Therefore, the canal with a length of about two and a half kilometers will be rescued and connected with the Buriganga river.

Md Atiqul Islam said that those who have already illegally occupied the canal and built various structures will have to give up the illegal occupation as soon as possible.

The DNCC mayor said everyone should be vocal against illegal occupants. The canals must be rescued at any cost to free the city from problems such as waterlogging.

“Rescue and cleaning activities of canals are continuing in different places with the help of people. Demarcation of the two banks of each canal will be done and proper maintenance measures will be taken,” said the mayor.

Responding to a question from reporters, Atiqul Islam said “The canals were in a state of disarray due to the negligence of WASA and Water Development Board, which were in charge before handing over the canals to Dhaka North City Corporation.”

DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md Selim Reza, Chief Engineer Brigadier General Muhammad Amirul Islam, Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore SM Sharif-ul Islam, Chief Property Officer Md Mozammel Haque and Local Councilor Asif Ahmed were present during the drive among others.
