The National University on Monday took a decision that the parliament members (MPs) cannot hold the post of president of the governing body (GB) of the colleges affiliated to it.

The National University took the decision as per the verdict of the High Court on 25 November 2019, said a press release signed by Prof Dr Moniruzzaman, inspector of colleges of NU.

“Until further notice, divisional commissioners at the division level, deputy commissioners at the district level and Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) at the upazila level will serve as the governing body president in place of the MPs,” the press release said.

About the decision, Md Faizul Karim, Director of the Department of Public Relations, Information and Counseling of NU told Bangladesh Post, “After reviewing the verdict of high court, national university authority took the decision that local parliament members cannot be the governing body president.”

Earlier, The High Court on July 16 released the full text of a verdict that declared "illegal" the nomination or appointment of members of parliament as the president of governing bodies of educational institutions, including degree colleges across the country.

According to the verdict, a member of parliament has to be elected by the people. On the other hand, the rank of the authorities who appoint the governing body of the private institutions is below the position of the lawmaker.

The verdict further reads, “All honourable MPs have to remain dedicated all the time to the enactment of important national laws. Besides, the position of chairmen of governing bodies is in stark contrast to the great position of MPs."
