The interim government has cancelled the national holiday on August 15.
The decision was taken on Tuesday during a meeting of the advisory council of the interim government at the Chief Adviser's Office at the State Guest House Jamuna.
“The decision to cancel the national holiday on August 15 was taken unanimously after a discussion with the council of advisers and political parties,” said a press release.
Meeting sources said the cabinet division would issue a gazette notification soon in this regard.
August 15 had been observed as National Mourning Day, the day for commemorating the killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with most of his family members on the day in 1975, for the last 15 years during the previous Awami League-led government.
After the fall of Sheikh Hasina led government on August 5, there had been increasing demands from various quarters to cancel the holiday. Earlier on Monday, several leaders of different political parties, including BNP held a meeting with
Dr Mohammad Yunus, chief adviser of the interim government, and placed their opinions to cancel the public holiday.
According to sources, the decision was taken on the basis of a consensus during the recent dialogues with political parties.
