The post of head teacher and assistant head teacher at 28,832 government primary schools remained vacant across the country. Of them, the post of head teachers of 7,018 schools and assistant head teachers of 21,814 schools remained vacant till December 2019, state minister for primary and mass education M Zakir Hossain told the parliament on Tuesday.
He made the disclosure at the parliament responding to a question from treasury bench lawmaker Mamunur Rashid Kiron. He said that the ministry writes the Public Service Commission to take necessary steps to fill the vacant posts. He said that assistant head teachers were carrying out the duty of head teachers as promotion of each assistant head teacher to the post of head teacher remained suspended following a court order.
Responding to a question of ruling Awami League lawmaker MA Latif, the minister said that government recruited 1,79,717 teachers between 2009 and 2018. Besides, responding to a question from AL lawmaker Ahmed Firoz Kabir, education minister Dipu Moni said that 302 colleges were nationalised across the country in 2018 an 2019.
