The Bangladesh Army has not received any directive from the government to be engaged in the upcoming central student union elections in different universities and there is no scope for such involvement in future either, according to Inter Services Public Relation Directorate (ISPR).

Recently, reports were seen in various media and social media platforms on the possible deployment of the Bangladesh Army during the elections that drew the attention of the Army, it said in a press release.

The Bangladesh Army thinks that under the direct supervision of law enforcement agencies and the overall administration of the universities, the upcoming student union elections will be conducted in a peaceful and festive environment, the ISPR said.

The Bangladesh Army, however, extended best wishes for the upcoming polls.

On Tuesday, Dhaka University authorities announced that the army will be kept as a ‘striking force’ at its main entrances during Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) election scheduled for September 9.

Under a three-tier security arrangement, members of the university BNCC and the proctorial team will guard polling centers, police will be deployed and the army will remain stationed at the seven entrances of the university as a ‘striking force’.

The decisions were disclosed on Tuesday after a views-exchange meeting between returning officers and candidates for VP, GS, and AGS posts, held at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building.

The decision sparked mixed reactions among students and candidates.
