As shambolic as it may sound but no gazette is still passed to make Kazi Nazrul Islam the national poet of the country. This is not only a shameful fact but also a disgraceful one for our nation to bear.
Kazi Nazrul Islam is mentioned as our national poet in various national, state documents and events. He is also written as a national poet in some laws, which are just some informal recognitions from the country.
A few days ago, the 122nd birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam passed but still, we did not give him any proper recognition and there are no visible steps taken yet from the Cultural Affairs Ministry or any other concerned organisations and institutions.
If the recognition is not officially there
then the younger generation will forget
about Nazrul’s contribution
Some experts opine that it does not matter whether Kazi Nazrul Islam is officially recognised as our national poet or not, his place is very high and will always remain our national poet.
It is very unfortunate that we could not make an official declaration even after 50 years of independence and 49 years of Nazrul’s coming to Bangladesh.
If the recognition is not officially there then the younger generation will forget about Nazrul’s immense contribution. Therefore, government should immediately publish a gazette notification to announce Kazi Nazrul Islam as the National Poet. Or else, in the future everyone will forget about his contribution to this nation.
Nazrul should always be there in our hearts through his literature, music and we should take inspiration from his involvement in our political and social justice.
