Both mental and physical torture on the freshers in the country’s public universities has crossed the limit in recent time. Several groups of senior students mostly have been humiliating, abusing and torturing the fresher students in the name of orientation.

This orientation culture has now turned into a weapon of torture and assault both mentally and physically. Such barbaric incidents of torture took place at University of Dhaka, University of Rajshahi, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Begum Rokeya University and Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University in the last one month, according to media reports. However, university authorities have expelled some students for their involvement in ragging the freshers.

The new students who were assaulted and abused by their seniors have made ten written complaints to their respective university authorities. Many victims have

become traumatised due to inhuman and barbaric physical and mental torture at their respective residential halls and campuses.

We are

concerned over such

inhuman and cruel torture of freshers

university campuses

Recently a female student of finance and banking department of Islamic University in Kushtia was tortured and humiliated in presence of senior students. But no one opposed the attackers or rescued her from the clutches of the unruly students. The incident has sent a shock wave across the campus and the country as well.

Getting enrolled at renowned public university is a difficult challenge for any student of his or her entire life. But the new students’ dreams are shattered every year in the beginning of their academic session when they are tortured or intimidated in many ways for different lame excuses on the university campuses by their seniors and activists of different political parties’ student wings.

We are concerned over such inhuman and cruel torture of freshers at university campuses. The university authorities must act to put an end to such ragging culture immediately.
