No cricket before May: Papon

All the games throughout the country are suspended indefinitely due to coronavirus. Cricket is no exception and has stopped as well. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief Nazmul Hassan Papon do not have a clear idea of when this difficult time will end and when will cricket return to the field. He does not think that there will be an improvement in situation before May.

On March 19, Dhaka Premier Cricket (DPL) was postponed after only one round of matches. Without any game and practice, cricketers are also spending time by sitting idle at home. Everyone is waiting for this time to end.

BCB chief said he do not see the pssibility of cricket returning at least before May. Speaking with a media on Sunday, he said “We are going to maintain the highest level of caution.

We don't know where, when or how it will end. I think after April there may be a chance to talk but before that I don't think that there is an opportunity to talk about sports,” he had said.

The board will think of starting the Premier League in May if the coronavirus infection is under control in the country in April, but the head of the board said, “If the situation is favourable after April, then we will take some preparations.

We will then think about the DPL whether it can restart or not. The reason is that it takes some preparation to start playing after such a crisis.”

However, the jeopardy in national team’s cricket fixtures is a concern.  The coronavirus strike’ stalled Bangladesh’s Pakistan and Ireland's tour. Australia tour in June is also an uncertainty. “What will happen to the international schedule, what will happen to the series’ is not  clear yet.

I have talked to other members of the ICC, they have no idea when all this will be over.  So, we do not yet know the fate of the international fixtures,” said Papon. The board will see what other sub-continent teams do when it comes to returning to the field at any stage.

Because of health risks, they do not want to rush in, “We are keeping an eye on how the subcontinent teams are planning to return to the field.  However, our top priority is to be careful and not to rush.”
