No compromise with principles: President

President Abdul Hamid on Saturday urged the country’s teachers not to compromise with principals and ideals for personal interest to uphold their own dignity.
He said, “The news and reports recently published in the mass media about the county’s universities shocked me as the Chancellor.”
Observing that most of the university, instead of taking part in the education and research activities, keep busy in lobbying for getting different administrative posts and designations nowadays, the president said, “They do not hesitate using their students for their personal interests. Besides, some of them, forgetting the teachers-students’ relationship, also get involved in exchanging money for their mutual interests that is very disgraceful and dishonourable.”
He came up with the observations while addressing eleventh convocation of Rajshahi University on Saturday at the university stadium.
Education minister Dr Dipu Moni, addressed the programme as special guest while eminent historian Professor Ranjan Chakrabarti, the Vice-Chancellor of Vidyasagar University, Kolkata, India, addressed the convocation as convocation speaker.
The Chancellor said that the university teachers keep in mind that they are university teachers. People want to see them in the highest place of honour and dignity. So, they should not compromise with principles and ideal for their personal interest. They have to uphold their own dignity and also take the responsibility so that the ideals don’t get suppressed by the personal interests.
Addressing the convocation programme, he also said, they have political views that may be different from others, as they are politically very conscious persons. But, they must ensure that its negative effects cannot fall on the institution or its students.
He said that, to make the huge amount of youth society as skilled manpower, there is no alternative of establishing university at a proportionate rate. Considering this, the government has taken different initiative to set up a university at every district across the country that will play a positive role in turning Bangladesh into developed and rich country by 2041.
Besides, The Chancellor also urged the graduate students to uphold the ideals of truth and justice in their future life and also to protest against corruption and irregularities with morality and consistency.
Education Minister Dipu Moni said, “The university teachers will not only teach the students but also will play an important role to establish a good nation. Even, it is very necessary to make students as skillful in an appropriate way in research sectors.”
Convocation speaker eminent historian Professor Ranjan Chakrabarti, the Vice-Chancellor of Vidyasagar University, Kolkata, India, said that “I’m feeling a lot of happiness to come in Bangladesh and also to join the convocation of Rajshahi University. I have heard about the university different times for its’ outstanding performance in education and research sectors. I’m hoping that the university will also keep a great role in South Asia in future.”
RU vice chancellor professor M Abdus Sobhan, said “The Rajshahi University already gets fame for its outstanding role in education and research fields. We are working to improve also the education method in future.”
A total of three thousand and four hundred thirty-two students, who earned their masters, MBBS, BDS, MPhil and PhD degrees between 2015 and 2016 at Rajshahi University, have registered their names for the convocation.
