The National University (NU) had planned to admit students in 13 century-old colleges of the country through admission test from 2020-21 academic year. But, the admission test of those centenary colleges will not be held for this session, due to Coronavirus outbreak.
Students will be admitted to these colleges on the basis of SSC and HSC results. However, from next year, there are plans to take separate exams in colleges that are 100 years old or over 50 years old.
The 13 colleges are: Rajshahi College, Chittagong College, Government Haji Muhammad Mohsin College (Chittagong), Narail Government Victoria College, Government Brajmohan (BM) College (Barisal), Murari Chand (MC) College (Sylhet), Edward College (Pabna), Comilla Victoria Government College, Government Brajlal (BL) College (Khulna), Ananda Mohan College (Mymensingh), Carmichael College (Rangpur), Government Prafulla Chandra (PC) College (Bagerhat), and Government Rajendra College (Faridpur).
The decision was taken by the NU, in a preliminary discussion with the policy makers of the Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC) regarding the admission test in these colleges affiliated to the NU.
Md Mashiur Rahman, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the National University said, "It was in our plan to take exams in colleges. Due to the ongoing pandemic situation, this time the decision to take the admission test has been halted. But in the future, students will be admitted to the college through a test - this is in our thoughts.”
However, Dhaka College, Eden Women's College and Kabi Nazrul Government College are affiliated to Dhaka University. Admission test and educational activities of these colleges are under Dhaka University.
On the other hand, there are 8 pre-model colleges - Dhaka Commerce College, Siddheswari Girls’ College, Lalmatia Women's College, Uttar Bangla College in Lalmonirhat, Syed Ahmed College in Bogra, Sakhipur Residential Women's College in Tangail, Daulatpur College in Kushtia and Rafiqul Islam in Kishoreganj.
It is learnt that in December last year, the NU authority sent a letter to the Ministry of Education and UGC, asking them to be associated with the admission process of 20 general and science and technology universities in the country. Although initial discussions were held, it did not proceed further that time. However, the policy makers of the NU have indicated that there is a possibility of joining the cluster-based admission process in the future.
