A case has been filed against 29 people including Mujibur Rahman Nixon Chowdhury, former MP of Faridpur-4 constituency, in connection with the arson attack and vandalism on government establishments in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur district.
Asaduzzaman, sub-inspector of Bhanga Police Station, filed the case on Tuesday night.
Nixon Chowdhury, former AL lawmaker was made the prime accused in the case while former chairman of Hamirdi union Parishad, Khokon Mia, a close aide of Nixon was made no 2 accused in the case, said Shamsul Azam, additional superintendent of Faridpur police.
According to police, valuables worth Tk 40 lakh were damaged during the attack.
Earlier, in the day, police arrested the chairman of Algi Union Parishad in a case filed under speedy trial act.
Earlier, on Monday, protesters went on a rampage in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur district opposing the demarcation of the Faridpur-4 constituency by the Election Commission.
They vandalised Bhanga Police Station, the Upazila Parishad building, a highway police outpost and the Bhanga municipality building, and set the local Election Commission office and several vehicles on fire.
The demonstrations came following the Election Commission’s recent gazette which redrew boundaries for 46 parliamentary constituencies ahead of the national election.
According to the gazette, Algi and Hamirdi unions of Bhanga upazila, previously under Faridpur-4, have been attached to Nagar Kanda upazila under Faridpur-2.
