Nine die, 11 hurt in road crashes countrywide

At least nine people were killed and 11 injured in three separate road crashes in different parts of the county on Saturday.

According to local sources, four passengers of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw were killed in a head-on collision between an auto-rickshaw and a truck in Chandraganj Purba Bazar area under Begumganj upazila of  Noakhali district on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Md. Rahmat Ullah Bhuiyan, 65, of Latifpur village under Candraganj Police Station of Lakshmipur district, army personnel Fazlul Karim, 50, and Md. Alauddin, 45, resident of the same area. The identity of the other person could not be known.

Police said the accident occurred when the CNG-run auto-rickshaw was going to Begumganj upazila from Lakshmipur with some passengers. 

On the way, it collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction on Saturday morning.

As a result, the two vehicles fell into a roadside canal, leaving four passengers including the driver of the auto-rickshaw dead on the spot, officer-in-charge (OC) of 

Chandraganj Highway Police Ruhul Amin said.

Police recovered the bodies from the spot, the OC said.

In another incident, two construction workers were killed and five were injured when a truck collided with a pick-up van at Ansar Road in Sreepur upazila in Gazipur district early Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Russel Mia, 25, and Abu Sufian, 25, of Sunamganj district.

 The accident occurred around 4:30 am when a dump truck hit the Mawna-bound pick-up van carrying construction workers, leaving Russel dead on the spot and six others injured, said Belal Ahmed, station officer of Sreepur Fire Service.

 The injured were taken to the Sreepur Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared Sufian dead.

Police seized the truck, and legal steps will be taken in this regard, said Md Kuddus, sub-inspector of Sreepur Police Station.

 In another major incident,three members of a family died when a speeding covered van crushed their private car in Bausia Union area on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway of Gazaria Upazilla in the district in the early hours of Saturday.

The deceased were identified as - Alamgir, 55, his son Jahir, 30, and Jahir's maternal aunt Rahela Begum, 50, hailing from Chandpur.

Two others were also injured in the accident that occurred around 2:15 am Saturday, and they were taken to the Upazila Health Complex by police and locals.

Officer-in-charge of Gazaria police station Rajib Khan said, "The private car was recovered from the spot."

Necessary legal action is underway, he added.
