Newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal on Wednesday said the next parliamentary elections will be held in a free and peaceful environment. He also said people will exercise their voting rights independently in the polls.

“I will protect the right to vote. It is not just a word. Voters will exercise their voting rights in the next general election in a free and peaceful environment,” he said while talking to the reporters after a procession in front of the Bangabandhu International Conference Center in Dhaka.

The procession, organised by the Election Commission, started from Manik Mia Avenue and ended at BICC, marking National Voters’ Day 2022.

The CEC said, “The theme of this year's Voters’ Day is ‘Promise of Mujib Year, Voting Rights will be protected’. But this promise should not be just word. It must be meaningful.”

Among others, election commissioners Rashida Sultana, Ahsan Habib Khan, Md Alamgir and Anisur Rahman and EC employees also took part in the procession.

It should be mentioned that the EC observed the National Voters’ Day for the fourth times.

The new EC body led by Kazi Habibul Awal was formed on February 26.
