Panchlaish Thana police rescued a five-day-old new-born from Parashuram in Feni who was stolen from Chittagong Medical College (CMCH) Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on Tuesday afternoon.

She was receiving treatment in the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.

Officer-in-Charge of Panchlaish Police Station Santosh Kumar Chakma said that two women were arrested along with the baby from the district on Wednesday morning.

The two arrested are:  Nasima Akhtar, 23 and her mother Kharu Akhtar, 42.

"Due to the regular doctor's rounds from 8am to 2pm, no relatives were allowed in the hospital ward. However, after 2pm, the child was not found in the hospital ward," explained Abu Md Noman, the father of the infant.

Later, the child's father has complained to the Police Station that his daughter was stolen from the NICU of the hospital.

When the matter spread in the hospital, the accused were identified after viewing the recorded CCTV footage.

Director of CMC Hospital Brigadier General Shamim Ahsan said multiple children were seen leaving with legitimate discharge papers in the hospital's CCTV footage.

An extra child, however, was identified among them, and the person taking this child was identified through the footage.

"When contacted over the mobile number provided in the records, we found discrepancies in his statement. Based on this lead, police conducted an operation in Feni and rescued the child," he added.
