The government is going to establish a new university named ‘Dhaka Central University’ for the seven government colleges affiliated with Dhaka University. This university will follow a mixed teaching method, where 40% of classes will be conducted online and 60% in person. However, all exams will be taken in person.

Md Mojibur Rahman, Additional Secretary (routine duty) of the Secondary and Higher Education Division, shared the plan at a press briefing held at the Secretariat on Monday. He said the new university will follow an interdisciplinary academic structure. Students will study non-major subjects during the first four semesters and focus on major subjects in the last four. If needed, students will be allowed to change their discipline at the beginning of the fifth semester, but they will not be allowed to change their college. The new university will have four schools – School of Science (Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, and Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College), School of Arts and Humanities (Govt Titumir College), School of Business (Govt Titumir College), and School of Law and Justice (Kabi Nazrul Govt College and Govt Shaheed Suhrawardy College).

The main campus of Dhaka Central University will be set up at a central location. The existing colleges will continue their higher secondary programs and cadre officers will remain at the colleges.

Once the university becomes fully functional, university-level teachers will be recruited through a proper process. Interested college teachers will also be allowed to apply. Students of the first year will get laptops, and low-cost internet service will be arranged.

An ordinance for the university is expected this year. The academic and administrative activities will be run by a council, senate, and syndicate. Each college will have two deputy proctors—one male and one female.
