Kajol Baran Das: Dr Mohammad Shahid Hossain Chowdhury, the newly appointed Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of Patuakhali, began his first official day in office by planting a green Saptaparni (locally known as Chatim) tree — a symbol of peace, longevity, and environmental harmony.
The tree was planted on Sunday morning in the premises of the Patuakhali DC Office. Prior to visiting the Treasury Branch, he was honoured with a Guard of Honour by a smart contingent of the police.
Present during the occasion were Jewel Rana, Deputy Director of Local Government; Mohsin Uddin, Additional Deputy Commissioner; Tarek Hawlader, Additional District Magistrate; and Md Kamrul Hasan Sohel, Chief Executive Officer of the District Council, along with other officials and staff of the district administration.
Through this symbolic act, Dr Chowdhury pledged to work for sustainable development, environmental conservation, and public welfare during his tenure.
He remarked that the Saptaparni tree’s dense green foliage helps cool the environment, reduces air pollution, and offers safe refuge for biodiversity. Its medicinal properties also make it valuable in traditional healing.
A 25th batch BCS (Administration) cadre, Dr Chowdhury holds a PhD and post-doctorate from Japan. Local residents and officials welcomed him with hope for justice and constitutional rights.
