A total of 108 flood-hit families in Habignaj district get new houses, cash money to repair their damaged houses and grants to cope with the losses due to recent flooding in the area.

Among them, 12 flood-hit families get cash assistance for building new houses, while 13 people get cash money for repairing their houses and 83 people get grants and relief materials to cope with losses.

Two US-based organisations--Michigan Badminton Family and Amin Realty & Associates-- stand by the flood-hit families with the financial grants and relief materials.

The assistance was handed over to the flood-hit families through a simple ceremony held at Ajmiriganj Launch Ghat in Habiganj district on Thursday (July 14). The programme was arranged in collaboration with US expatriates Soumik Amin and Masum Ahmed.

Senior assistant secretary at Law Ministry Samsuddin Masum, US expatriate Masum, senior reporter of Daily Bangladesh Pratidin and joint secretary of Dhaka-based Sylhet Division Journalists’ Association Sakhawat Kawsar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ajmiriganj Police Station Masuk Ali and chairman of Sadar UP Mobarul Islam, lecturer at Baniachong’s Jonab Ali College Mahmud Mia, social worker Nazimuddin Bahar and Mufti Nasir Uddin Sourab were present at the programme, among others.

Some of them spoke on the occasion. In their speeches, they said that many flood-hit people have lost everything to the natural disaster and now rely on relief and assistance for survival. They thanked the Michigan Badminton Family and Amin Realty & Associates for expanding their helping hands to the flood-affected victims.

The speakers called upon the expatriates and the solvent people of the society to come forward to provide all possible assistance to the flood victims in the country, particularly the flood-hit people of greater Sylhet as the region experienced frequent devastating floods this year. Suffering of people living in many areas of Sylhet division is not going to end soon, they said.

Sakhawat Kawsar told the Bangladesh Post that the people who get assistance from the two US-based organisations feel happy to get the assistance. He lauded the role of the Michigan Badminton Family and Amin Realty & Associates.
