The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is all set to appoint a new head coach, a position that has been vacant since the board parted ways with Steve Rhodes following a disappointing World Cup campaign in July.
The BCB officials conducted a tele-conference with a few probable candidates yesterday.
“Even today [Wednesday] we have talked over the phone with a few probable candidates for the head coach’s post. We are confident that we will be able to disclose the name of a new head coach over the next one or two days,” BCB’s media committee chairman Jalal Yunus told The Daily Star yesterday.
Ex-New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson has been among the frontrunners for the Bangladesh job.
But the BCB was looking into other available options given Hesson is among the shortlisted candidates for the Indian head coach’s post as well.
BCB director Jalal did not make a comment on Hesson but did say they are considering a strong vision and passion in the “new coach” along with the financial aspect.
There had been talk that former New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson was all set to become the Tigers’ new coach. However, although the board was keen to rope in the 44-year-old, according to sources close to developments there are very slim chances of Hesson, who is also one of the shortlisted candidates to be India’s head coach, coming to Bangladesh.
Yunus, however, was not willing to make any comment on Hesson’s current status but he did say that the attributes the board is looking for are strong vision and passion, along with the financial considerations.
Former South African coach Russell Domingo had visited the country for an interview with the BCB earlier this month, and board officials were satisfied with his plan and vision during the presentation. BCB was keen to rope in the former Kiwi coach Mike Hesson but according to the sources there are very slim chances for the 44-year-old to arrive here.
The BCB high-ups Wednesday completed their search through a last batch of teleconferences with the shortlisted candidates and are now working to reach a decision.
The post for the Bangladesh head coach was vacant following the board’s decision to part ways with Steve Rhodes after a below-par result in the World Cup 2019 in July.
“[Wednesday] we spoke with a few candidates over the phone. We [BCB] are confident that we will be able to announce the name of the new head coach within the next one or two days,” said BCB media committee chairman Jalal Younus to the media Wednesday.
