Nearly three months after season 1's debut, Netflix has finally renewed The Sandman starring Tom Sturridge to tell more of Neil Gaiman's stories.

Netflix officially confirms The Sandman is returning after finally renewing the acclaimed series. After decades of trying and failing to make a Sandman movie, Neil Gaiman's acclaimed graphic novel finally got the live-action adaptation fans had been waiting for in 2022 thanks to Netflix. The streaming service announced plans to make the show in 2019 with David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg helping bring the show to life. The Sandman season 1 followed Tom Sturridge as Dream as he begins the journey of restoring the Dreaming. The cast included Boyd Holbrook as Corinthian, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer Morningstar, Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death.

Since The Sandman season 1 ended, audiences have been left waiting for news on whether Tom Sturridge will continue playing Dream. Neil Gaiman has repeatedly attempted to clarify the show's future, but that has not stopped confusion from spreading. The wait for news on The Sandman season 2's renewal routinely brought confusion as the series earned mostly positive reviews and topped Netflix's streaming charts. Throughout all the uncertainty, there has been a general sense of optimism that Netflix would renew The Sandman at some point. The favorable outlook only increased after a secret episode surprise dropped on the streaming service in August.

Now, Netflix has officially announced the renewal of The Sandman, which will continue expanding upon Gaiman's graphic novels. The renewal news comes hours after a since-deleted tweet from the official DC Comics Twitter account seemingly announced the renewal. There is no information currently available about when The Sandman's next episodes will begin filming, what stage of development it is in, or when audiences will see Dream's adventures continue.

There might not be any official story details confirmed for confirmed for The Sandman's continuation, but Gaiman's graphic novels provide a good baseline for what viewers could see next. The first season adapted the first two of his graphic novels, so continuing that trend would mean that Dream Country and The Seasons of Mists are next. It is worth noting that The Sandman episode 11 already told the popular "Dream of a Thousand Cats" story from Dream Country. The first season also set up a story from this volume of Gaiman's graphic novel by having Morpheus meet young William Shakespeare in episode 6.
