Nepal extradited a Bangladeshi citizen to India, who is one of the main accused in the brutal murder of Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim Anar in Kolkata last month, according to a media report on Friday.
According to police sources quoted by the MyRepublica.com news portal, Nepal's Interpol branch handed over Mohammad Siyam Hussain to Indian authorities on Monday morning after Nepal Police contacted him.
Hussain, who had fled to Nepal after the murder, was apprehended from a border area of Nepal last Thursday, as reported.
The 56-year-old Awami League MP Anar, who had travelled to Kolkata for medical treatment, went missing on May 17, as per a complaint filed by his acquaintance on May 18.
Anar was allegedly murdered in a luxurious flat in the New Town area near Kolkata. West Bengal police have arrested a butcher accused of dismembering the Bangladeshi lawmaker's body into 80 pieces and mixing them with turmeric before disposing of them at various locations, including a canal around New Town.
It is suspected that Anar’s friend and business partner, Akhtaruzzaman, who is now a US citizen, orchestrated the murder.
Despite Bangladesh police seeking Hussain's extradition, he was handed over to Indian authorities because he had entered Nepal from India, according to sources familiar with the matter. The accused was subsequently transferred to India via land route.
Nepal police officials disclosed that their Interpol unit did not inform local authorities about Hussain's arrest.
A team of four detectives from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch had travelled to Kathmandu to take custody of Hussain. They met with a senior Nepal Police officer and formally requested his deportation. However, their plea was turned down as Nepal lacks an extradition agreement with Dhaka.
