Nepal emerged victorious in the FIFA International Friendly Series against Bangladesh after a thrilling penalty shootout in the second and final game held at Kamalapur's Bir Shrestha Shaheed Sipahi Mohammad Mostofa Kamal Stadium.
The Nepal national women's football team secured a 4-2 victory in the shootout after a goalless 90 minutes of regulation play.
The first match of the series, which took place on Thursday at the same venue, ended in a 1-1 draw. Bangladesh took the lead in the 65th minute through their captain Sabina Khatun, but Nepal's Sabitra Bhandari equalized in the first minute of added time.
In the penalty shootout, Savitra Bhandari from Nepal opened the scoring, giving them a 1-0 lead. Bangladesh's Shamsunnahar then equalized to make it 1-1. Hira Kumari's goal put Nepal back in the lead at 2-1, and Nepal's goalkeeper Anjia Tumbapo saved Shiuli Azim's shot for Bangladesh, preventing a goal. After both teams hit the post with their shots, Nepal successfully scored in their fourth attempt, bringing the scoreline to 3-2. Bangladesh had the chance to equalize, but Monika's shot was saved by the goalkeeper. Nepal's Anika then scored in the fifth shot, securing a 4-2 victory for Nepal.
This win holds significance for Nepal as it helps heal the wounds of a previous loss to Bangladesh. Last September, Bangladesh emerged as clear champions by defeating Nepal 3-1 in Kathmandu. Nepal had been eager for an opportunity to avenge that defeat on their home ground, and finally, they seized the chance at the Kamalapur Stadium. The victory in the friendly series will undoubtedly boost the morale of the Nepal national women's football team as they continue their pursuit of success in future competitions.
