Champa Mandal, a second year student of Marketing Department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU), died on January 13 in 2018 at Ghonapara  as pick-up van ran over her. Soon after the incident, the students of BSMRSTU staged demonstration demanding foot over-bridge atGhonapara junction.

Vice Chancellor of BSMRSTU Prof Dr. Khondokar Nasiruddin and Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Gopalganj had assured of taking necessary steps for a foot over-bridge. Even after passing of 15 months, the project is stuck in the assurance only.

Ghonapara junction adjacent to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) has become one of the most busy junctions of Gopalganj. Many people have to cross the road every day.

Seven educational institutes including BSMRSTU, an eye hospital, an Essential Drug Institute, a PTI Institute, a super market, a mosque, an under construction dental hospital and around one hundred big and small shops are situated within  two kilometres of this junction.

More than 7000 vehicles cross this junction every day. But there is no any foot-over-bridge there. People cross the junction with risk of life. For this reason, accident has become a regular feature of Ghonapara.

According to the Police record of Gopalganj sadar, there are five people died in this area in 2018 due to several road accidents.

In this backdrop, it is now essential to construct a foot over-bridge at the area.

Mikail Thandut, the owner of Bismillah Store near Ghonapara junction, said that road accident is very common here. Construction of a foot over bridge is highly needed there.

Salman Rahman, a final year student of BSMRSTU. said, “We demonstrated last year demanding a foot over-bridge, but it is a matter of sorrow that the authorities concerned have not taken any necessary step in this regard till now.”

Md. Mukhlesur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Gopalganj, sai,  “We have already forwarded the letter to the Road and Highway Department , but they didn’t send any feedback yet.”

“We will again send a letter to the related department for taking necessary steps to build a foot over-bridge over Ghonapara junction,” he also said.
