The first ever Bangladeshi film featuring surfing has been made titled ‘Naw Dorai’ which means ‘I’m not afraid’ and with an English title – ‘Dare to Surf’. The film has been directed by Taneem Rahman Angshu.
The film features Sunerah Binte Kamal and Sariful Razz in central roles. A poster revealing press conference was held at Bashundhara City Mall where those concerned with the film said that the film has been produced by Mahboob Rahman under the banner of Star Cineplex. Moreover, it is being said that this is the first time any film has been made under Star Cineplex’s banner.
Mahboob Rahman says, “The film is a global production. We are planning to release it in multiple countries including Bangladesh. We want to participate in international film festivals with this film. It is shot in the local dialect of Chattogram and as such will feature English subtitles for everyone’s ease of understanding.”
He adds, “Although Bangladeshi films have great potential very few titles actually make it big. That is why I want to try and understand the market better so that better films can be made which will represent Bangladesh in the international arena.”
The film is based on a true story about a surfer girl and her tragic story, with ninety percent of the film’s shooting being done at Cox’s Bazar.
It has been nearly a decade since surfing has become popular in the country and much of this credit goes to those who have practiced their interest and kept it alive in the Bangladeshi culture. These stories are what influence the producer to get interested into making this feature film.
