Navy strengthens security for fuel-carrying ships in Bangladesh waters

The Bangladesh Navy has strengthened security measures for fuel-carrying vessels operating in the country’s maritime territory to ensure uninterrupted energy supply and safeguard vital sea routes.

According to a statement issued on Thursday, the navy remains on constant watch to maintain the safety of Bangladesh’s maritime boundaries and ensure the smooth movement of commercial vessels that support the country’s import and export activities.

Authorities said liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and transport fuels such as petrol, diesel and jet fuel transported through Bangladesh’s waters rely heavily on shipments of crude oil, making the safe passage of fuel-carrying ships critically important.

In view of the current international and regional security situation, the navy has increased vigilance around fuel tankers positioned in Bangladesh’s maritime zone.

As part of the enhanced security arrangements, naval patrols and surveillance operations have been intensified in areas surrounding Chattogram seaport, deep-sea routes and other key maritime corridors linked to fuel transportation.

To strengthen monitoring, the navy has deployed warships, high-speed boats, maritime patrol aircraft and helicopters to maintain round-the-clock surveillance.

Through these platforms, naval forces are conducting continuous sea patrols, aerial monitoring and observation of suspicious vessels to ensure the safe anchoring, entry and departure of fuel ships at ports.

Officials said the additional security measures are primarily precautionary and aimed at strengthening the overall safety of the country’s fuel transportation system.

Special operational teams of the navy have also been kept ready in coastal and maritime areas to respond quickly to any potential smuggling activities or other illegal operations.

The Bangladesh Navy is working in coordination with port authorities, the Coast Guard, law enforcement agencies and relevant energy organisations to ensure the safe import, storage and transportation of fuel.

Officials added that the navy remains committed to protecting the country’s maritime boundaries, key infrastructure and economic interests while ensuring uninterrupted energy supply and safe maritime trade routes.
