In Laxmipur, fishermen and naval police went into a clash while fishing in the Meghna River in violation of government ban. A fisherman named Amir Hossain was shot dead. At least 20 people, including four policemen, were injured in the incident.
The incident took place on Sunday morning in the Meghna River in the Haat area of Maju Chowdhury in Sadar upazila. The injured are being treated at Laxmipur Sadar Hospital. Police have arrested 10 fishermen in the incident. The deceased was identified as Amir Hossain, son of Matlab Rari of Kutubpura area in Sadar upazila of Bhola district.
According to the naval police and locals, the government has imposed a two-month ban on fishing in the Meghna in March-April to protect ‘Hilsa’. Naval police launched an operation in the river on Sunday night to enforce the ban. When the patrol police reached the spot in the morning, 5-6 fishing boats surrounded them. At that time 50/60 fishermen made a surprise attack on the police. At that time they threw brick-bats (net sticks) at the police. Police later opened fire to bring the situation under control.
A fisherman named Amir Hossain was shot and injured. Police personnel Zahirul Islam, Mohsin, Anwar, Mubarak and the driver of the police speed board were injured in the incident. The injured were later admitted to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital. Police said the fisherman died in the morning after being taken to Dhaka Medical College.
Sub-Inspector of Naval Police Kamal Hossain and SP Kamruzzaman of Chandpur confirmed the incident. A case in this regard is under process, police said.
