Bangladesh Teachers Association (BTA), comprising teachers of private educational institutions, has demanded the nationalization of all MPO-registered educational institutions on the occasion of the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The demand was made by Md Mezbaul Islam, Secretary General of BTA at a press conference at the Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall of the National Press Club on Friday.
He said, the non-government school teachers working in secondary education are suffering from extreme financial hardship at this time along with education itself. About 95 percent of secondary education is dependent on private educational institutions. Out of about 30,000 educational institutions, only 660 are run by the government.
Quoting the number of private institutions, he said,“About 95 percent of the students are receiving education from private institutions. Therefore, it is very important to nationalise the private educational institutions.”
He further said, if education is nationalised, the poorest will benefit the most. The government has already nationalised one secondary school and one college in each upazila. But such isolated nationalisation is having an impact on schools around.
He expressed the hope that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would commemorate Mujib-Borsho by announcing the nationalisation of all private educational institutions on next October 5, the ‘World Teachers' Day’.
Members of the association MA Kashem, Mizanur Rahman, Nazmus Sadat,Nishikanta Banerjee and many others were also present at the event.
