Although the tourists and recreation centers have reopened after restrictions being relaxed, the Mirpur National Zoo is set to remain closed for the time being.
According to authorities, the zoo could be open to visitors early next month by ensuring hygiene and animal safety.
With nationwide restrictions being lifted, many people visited the National Zoo with their families on Thursday only to be disappointed and returned.
Motin Ahmed visited the zoo from Rayar Bazar with his young daughter and wife. Upon reaching, he approached the ticket counter and was disappointed to hear the news that the zoo has not opened to the public yet.
He told the correspondent, "We have not been out on a family outing for a long time due to Covid restrictions. I came to the zoo after hearing that all public places and recreational points were open. We just have to go back home now.”
As per the National Zoo Curator, Dr. Md Abdul Latif, the National Zoo is not the same as other entertainment centers. The living animals in the zoo are at risk of being infected with the virus as well. If one is affected, it could spread and hence visitors are still not allowed to enter to avoid the risk.
According to the concerned, special preparations are being made at the zoo to avoid the risk of animals. After the preparations are done, visitors will have to collect tickets by standing in a red circle three feet away from the entrance gate. Everyone has to enter after wearing a mask and walk around maintaining social distance inside.
Hand sanitizers, soap and water will be provided at 12 places for the visitors at different spots in the zoo. A one-way road is set to be made for visitors inside. Announcements will be made at all times to comply with the restrictions.
Security in front of the animals will be further enhanced. Dirt accumulated in many places, will be cleaned and the animal sheds are being renovated.
The curator shared that the zoo has 10-12 thousand visitors every day during normal time. This reaches over 15,000 on holidays. A decision on the matter will be taken within the next one week. The preparations in the zoo are in the final stages.
He further informed that a decision would be taken in consultation with the ministry and the zoo may be open to visitors from early next month. If the decision is made, it will be informed to the concerned ministry including the media through a press conference.
