‘National helpline receives 21.6m calls in 3 years’

State Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Zunaid Ahmed Palak said the national helpline 999 received 21.6 million calls for any urgent need including rape complaints over the past three years.

The minister made the remarks while addressing a beat policing rally organized by Singra Police Station on Singra Upazila Parishad premise in Natore on Saturday.

Palak said the people of Bangladesh can sleep peacefully because police stay vigilant. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken a groundbreaking steps to modernize the police and some 1,000 police stations have been brought under fibre optical cable facility, he added.

The junior minister further said if police and people work together against social crime it is possible to eradicate all crimes from the country.

Our goal is not only to punish the criminals, but to eradicate crimes, he said adding PM Hasina has approved the death penalty for rape, which will be passed unanimously in the next parliamentary session.

Presided over by Upazila Awami League President Ohidur Rahman Sheikh, Upazila Parishad Chairman Shafiqul Islam, Mayor Jannatul Ferdous, Officer-in-Charge of Singra Police Station Noor Alam Siddiqui and others were present on the occasion.
