National Disaster Preparedness Day observed at DU

The National Disaster Preparedness Day- 2020 was observed on Tuesday on Dhaka University campus in a befitting manner. To mark the day, teachers and students of DU Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies (IDMVS), led by university’s Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman, brought out a colourful rally on the campus.

They also arranged a seminar titled ‘Disasster Management Thinking of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’ at RC Majumder auditorium. Pro VC of Bangladesh Open University and Founding Director of IDMVS Dr Khondoker Mokaddem Hossain presented the keynote speech at the seminar.  ‘Bangabandhu Chair’ of DU Dr. Atiur Rahman, dean of DU Arts Faculty Dr Abu Md Delwar Hossain and Director General of Department of Disaster Management (DDM) Md Mohsin also spoke at the seminar with Director of the institute Professor Mahbuba Nasreen in the chair.

Paying rich tribute to Father of the Nation Bnagabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, speakers said Bangabandhu took some outstanding mesearues after the independence to reduce the risk of natural disasters and calamities.

Following him, government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken some time-befitting measures targeting to trim down the damage and risk of natural disaster and thus, the rate of losses during natural disasters is being reduced gradually, they added.

They also put importance on well-coordinated and comprehensive efforts of the government and non- government organisations, involving local communities for ensuring early awareness to reduce losses during natural disasters.
