National Fisheries Fortnight-2026 is being observed in Lakshmipur and Parbatipur with rallies, fish fry releases, discussions and other programmes aimed at boosting fish production, ensuring protein supply and promoting self-reliance through fisheries.
In Lakshmipur, the fortnight began on Sunday under the theme “A self-reliant country through fish, Bangladesh first”. The district administration and Department of Fisheries jointly organised the programmes, with District Commissioner S M Mehedi Hasan attending as chief guest.
District Fisheries Officer Jashim Uddin presided over a discussion and award distribution ceremony at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room. District Police Superintendent Abu Tarek, Civil Surgeon Dr Baharul Alam, and Municipal Administrator and Additional District Commissioner Samrat Khisa attended as special guests.
Earlier, the chief guest released fish fry into a pond at the Government Children’s Family before a colourful rally paraded through major roads in the town. Fishermen, fish farmers, entrepreneurs, traders and officials from government and private organisations participated in the programmes.
In Parbatipur, Dinajpur, National Fisheries Week was observed on Sunday with a colourful rally and discussion meeting at the Upazila Parishad auditorium. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Arafat Aman Aziz attended as chief guest, while Senior Fisheries Officer Khalid Moshraf presided.
Earlier, a rally paraded through the town before ending at the Upazila Parishad pond, where the UNO released Rui, Katla and Mrigel fry. Two successful fish farmers were also awarded crests for their achievements.
Speaking at the meeting, Khalid Moshraf said community-based fish farming and habitat development were continuing alongside modern farming technologies. He said mobile courts were also being conducted to enforce fisheries laws, prevent the use of formalin, regulate fish feed and hatcheries, and protect mother fish.
More than 200 fish farmers and journalists attended the Parbatipur programme. Further programmes include an exchange meeting on fisheries conservation and sustainable production, school-level essay and quiz competitions, and documentary screenings. The celebrations will conclude on Tuesday.
