Nat’l air pollution control committee holds first meet

The first meeting of the National Committee on Air Pollution Control formed in accordance with ‘Air Pollution Control Rules 22’ to control the country’s air pollution was held in the meeting room of the Cabinet Division under the chairmanship of Cabinet Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain on Thursday. 

Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr Farhina Ahmed, Additional Secretary (Environmental Pollution Control) Md Mizanur Rahman, Director General of the Department of Environment Dr Abdul Hamid,  secretaries and heads of department and twenty seven members of the committee were present in the meeting.

In the meeting, it was decided to strengthen the ongoing campaign against air pollution caused by construction activities, illegal brick kilns, black smoke from vehicles, especially large construction activities. City corporations will take strict measures against burning of municipal wastes on regular basis and take measures to clean the streets by sprinkling water. 

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and Department of Police will take appropriate measures to prevent transportation of soil, sand and garbage in uncovered trucks. It was also decided to form a technical committee to determine the variation in air quality.

It was further decided in the meeting that a recommendation should be made and submitted for making block bricks available and acceptable as an alternative to air pollution by burning bricks. 

The meeting requested all secretaries to take effective measures to control pollution during the implementation of infrastructure construction projects of all ministries.
